Autumn has arrived and a very busy Hawke’s Bay summer season has come to an end. Well, the weather was not always nice to us but it looks like all the citrus fruit on the trees do not seem to mind a bit more rain than usual. Quinces and feijoas have started falling off the trees – the ultimate sign that winter is not too far away. Recently the Gernot’s Gold kichen was busy making blackberry jam. This year with wild blackberries. They were smaller compared to last year’s but the flavour is still the same yummy reminder of the good old times when we went picking blackberries with nanna and poppa.

The bestseller last year was the persimmon cardamom jam, … again. It seems my customers at the farmers’ markets in Napier and Hastings can’t get enough of it. Well, it is great with cheese and chicken sandwich. Another jar that changed hands over the market table more often was the yuzu marmalade. It is an amazing fruit, with more seeds than juice, but the aroma is absolutely devine.

I wish everybody a lovely autumn with lots of relaxing golden days.
